Around 100 guests visited Brantwood last night for the official opening of Imagination and Reality: the Art of Arthur Ransome. A fine spring evening helped visitors enjoy both the exhibition and the main house at Brantwood.
The exhibition is now open daily until September 4, accompanied by a series of lectures and events at Brantwood and Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal.

We’re pleased to announce details of our first Temporary Moorings exhibition, Imagination and Reality: the Art of Arthur Ransome, which will be taking place in partnership with The Brantwood Trust from 19 May to 5 September, 2011.
The exhibition will be in the Blue Gallery at Brantwood, John Ruskin’s former home on the east side of Coniston Water. It will explore Arthur Ransome’s approach to illustrating the landscapes and plots of the Swallows and Amazons novels through examples of his original sketches and artwork.
A programme of occasional public lectures and events will run alongside the exhibition, offering insights into many aspects of Arthur Ransome’s life.

Voyages of Discovery Finishes at Bristol
Our first Voyages of Discovery display closed at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre on the afternoon of January 15. The Old Vic’s highly-successful production of Swallows and Amazons ended on the same evening.

The Bristol Old Vic’s highly-acclaimed and popular adaptation of Swallows and Amazons finishes its run this Saturday, January 15, with both matinee and evening performances. As of 11.00am today, January 13, there are some spaces at this afternoon’s matinee available, plus one standing space at this evening’s performance and one standing space and one restricted view seat at Saturday evening’s finale. Up to the minute details are available from the Old Vic Box Office on 0117 987 7877. This has been an excellent production, so we highly-recommend getting there if you possibly can.
The Trust’s Voyage of Discovery display will be at the Old Vic until Saturday afternoon, so please do take the remaining opportunities to visit. Those visiting the theatre on Saturday may wish to note that it will not be available after the matinee or before or after the final evening performance.
Voyages of Discovery Update
We mentioned in our previous news item that our Voyages of Discovery display is now in the First Floor Cafe area at the Bristol Old Vic. It will be there throughout the Old Vic’s production of Swallows and Amazons, up to January 15. Here are a couple of photographs of the display in its new home:

The Bristol Old Vic’s first preview performance of Swallows and Amazons took place on Wednesday evening. On the same day the Trust’s first Voyages of Discovery display was installed at the Old Vic, where it will be available to visitors throughout the Musical’s production run, December 1 to January 15.
The first preview performance was enthusiastically received by the audience. All the signs are that this will be a highly-entertaining and enjoyable adaptation of Arthur Ransome’s classic book.

Final arrangements are being made for the Bristol Old Vic’s premiere of Swallows and Amazons on 1 December. In addition to the musical itself, the Trust’s Voyages of Discovery display is ready to be installed in time for the premiere. Work is also continuing on the More 4 TV Documentary, Swallows and Amazons – the Bristol Old Vic Sets Sail, which is scheduled for transmission on 11 December.

We are very pleased to announce that our first Voyage of Discovery will take place at the Bristol Old Vic, where it will complement the Old Vic’s forthcoming production of Swallows and Amazons in December, 2010 and January, 2011.
Voyages of Discovery will provide theatre-goers with an introduction to Arthur Ransome’s life and to Swallows and Amazons, the first in his famous series of twelve children’s novels.
