Unabridged Swallows and Amazons Sets Sail

Swallows and Amazons, Swallowdale, Peter Duck, Winter Holiday and Coot Club have now been released as unabridged audiobooks by Audible.co.uk. The remaining seven novels, all read by Gareth Armstrong, will follow over the next three months.

Announcing the release, Audible’s director, Laurence Howell said: “Swallows and Amazons is children’s storytelling at its finest. We are thrilled to bring these stories to life for a new generation. We very much hope that families up and down the country set sail on their own imaginative voyages – no dinghy required!”

Vintage Plan to complete the Big Twelve

There is good news for anyone enjoying the new Vintage Children’s Classics editions of the Swallows and Amazons series, as Vintage intend to add the remaining six titles to their list in 2014.

We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea, Secret Water and The Big Six are scheduled for publication in mid June, with Missee Lee, The Picts and the Martyrs and Great Northern? following in mid October.

Swallows and Amazons Wins Book Cover Award

Pietari Posti has won the 2013 V&A Book Cover Illustration Award for the 2012 Vintage Classics edition of Swallows and Amazons.

In their announcement, the V&A’s judges explained that they “loved the strong use of colour and shape in Posti’s work and the way this created a dynamic visual theme throughout the series of books”.

Ransome Correspondence Auction Update

On April 29 we reported the forthcoming auction of Arthur Ransome’s correspondence to Meriol Trevor.

Bonhams will be auctioning this collection as Lot 205 in their forthcoming Books, Maps, Manuscripts and Historical Photographs sale on Wednesday, June 19, at 2.00pm. The auction details are now available online at Bonhams website.

Arthur Ransome on the Broads

Arthur Ransome on the Broads Book CoverRoger Wardale’s new book, Arthur Ransome on the Broads, has recently been published by Amberley Publishing. In it, Roger examines the way that Arthur Ransome’s eight Broads cruising holidays inspired and informed his novels Coot Club and The Big Six.

From the book’s cover: “Drawing freely on Ransome’s sailing log, his diaries and those of his wife, an intimate portrait emerges of the iconic children’s author on holiday, as well as a unique picture of the Norfolk Broads at a crucial point in their transition from the wilderness that he loved to a watery playground” – a tension that will be familiar to readers of Coot Club.

Swallows and Amazons at the Coniston Regatta

Current and Future EventsCome and join the fun at this year’s Coniston Regatta, taking place at Bank Ground Farm, from Thursday, 30 May to Saturday, 1 June. The Regatta will have a packed programme: traditional dinghies, steam boats and the National Trust’s Gondola dressed as Captain Flint’s houseboat afloat, and attractions ranging from fishing competitions to displays by local craftsmen ashore.

ART is bringing a Voyage of Discovery, with information about Swallows and Amazons, Arthur Ransome, and the Trust’s plans. We’re planning to have fun too! So if you are in the Coniston area or planning a visit to the Lakes, please do drop by and say hello.

Swallows and Amazons Engraved in Liverpool

Liverpool Library Walkway 3Liverpool’s Grade 1 listed Central Library re-opened to the public today, following a £50m refurbishment.

The refurbished library now includes a 22 metre long Literary Pavement. Made from granite, the pavement is engraved with book titles from world literature, including, at Liverpool Council’s request, Swallows and Amazons.
