Background

A prose allegory of mental processes which I meant to be enjoyed by children who should not notice there was an allegory at all. It has been enjoyed by a few elderly persons who have not noticed even that it was a story.

Ransome wrote The Blue Treacle in the winter of 1913 – 14, alongside Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp. It is an allegorical tale written by Ransome for his daughter Tabitha, who appears as the heroine.

Ransome’s friend, Molly Hamilton, tried unsuccessfully to find a publisher for The Blue Treacle in 1926. The Amazon Publications edition contains an afterword by Christina Hardyment, examining The Blue Treacle’s place in Ransome’s development as a writer.
